Imaging and Therapy

WWiKY scientists have a productive ‘bench to bedside’ record of established innovation in imaging hypoxia in cancer. Two diagnostic agents, developed by WWiKY members Hypoxycin-1 and FAZA (fluoroazomycin arabinoside), have been validated in clinical trials, and FAZA has now gained prominence as an effective PET radiopharmaceutical for imaging patients that have potential hypoxic regions of solid tumors. Diagnostic studies with these radiopharmaceuticals in humans have demonstrated that they are safe.

WWiKY’s molecular adaptations of these theranostics extend their range and applications in cancer therapy and other diseases which feature the hypoxic microenvironment, including stroke, myocardial disease, diabetes, arthritis and organ rejection that further add . WWiKY is now actively pursuing clinical and preclinical theranostic investigations of its prominent products.

HYPOXYCIN-1™ – A CANCER THERANOSTIC AGENT

  • A true hypoxia-selective precision theranostic drug since the same drug can image as well as treat solid hypoxic tumors, which assures pharmacokinetic matching and hypoxia targeting precision.
  • A multimodal imaging agent, i.e., it can be used either as a PET or SPECT radiopharmaceutical for imaging hypoxia, and it can image hypoxic tumors in ALL types of cancer (see below)
Example 1. Using [123I]-Hypoxycin-1™, axial SPECT Images of a cancer patient diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of tonsils.

Example 2. Using [123I]-Hypoxycin-1™, axial SPECT Images of a female cancer patient diagnosed with right frontal and right parietal brain metastases from small-cell lung carcinoma.

Example 3. PET Imaging of Prostate Cancer. [124I]-Hypoxycin™-1 PET images of PC3 tumor-bearing Nu-Nu mouse model. A 24h post-drug administration image (right) shows its localization in tumors and total background clearance.

  • Hypoxycin-1™ is safe: Image of a healthy volunteer demonstrates a fast clearance of the radioactive diagnostic molecule Hypoxycin-1™ from healthy tissues (See Image Below)
